I loved St. George Island, which was the first island in the Gulf of Mexico for me, and I would go back in an instant!
The beach was two sand dunes away from my campsite and an easy walk away. There were maybe 10 people at most over the two days I was on the beach that stretched for miles.
Compared to Jekyll Island, the water was crystal clear, and it had a nice inviting surf to it. The only thing that was a little worrisome aside from the ubiquitous rip tide warnings was the sign that said, “CAUTION STINGRAY AREA – SHUFFLE FEET WHILE WALKING IN WATER (APRIL – OCTOBER)”.
So, did I go frolicking in the surf? That would be a negative, Little Buddy, but I did dip my toes in on a couple of nice long walks.
Someone before me had gotten creative in lining up a bunch of shells on a log so I had some video fun doing a flyover of the arrangement. The sound of the surf in the background even adds a sound like the roar of a jet plane.
It was at this point in my trip that I made some major revisions to the itinerary. I came to the conclusion that if I simply used each overnight as a means to an end (to get to Baja California) then I wouldn’t have any time to enjoy places as beautiful as this island. So, I cancelled a lot of my future reservations (eating a lot of advanced deposits unfortunately) and stretched out the number of nights at several upcoming locations so that I could simply relax and enjoy more walks on the beach and local area attractions.
