Overnight 19 – Jekyll Island, GA

Notes

Jekyll Island has a really cool beach called Driftwood Beach which consists of dozens of full-sized trees that had been uprooted from somewhere else during storms and had floated around then washed up on the shore. Apparently back in 2023, Driftwood Beach ranked No. 3 in the United States and No. 12 in the world by Tripadvisor’s Best of the Best Beaches as part of its annual Travelers’ Choice® Awards. And I totally understand why.

As a bonus, there was a trail riding service whereby horseback riders could walk/trot amongst the trees and then go out into the very gentle surf!

The only down side was that the water was really muddy/brown colored. Not sure if that was due to a recent storm that might have roiled up the ocean floor or if that was its natural color. Either way, I didn’t really feel like wading out into it, so I went for a nice walk and then just pulled my chair up to a snaggle tree and enjoyed a book for a couple of hours.

There was also a cute little bird sanctuary at the campsite with lots of little bird feeders. But not many birds actually. Probably because of the big, bad bully squirrels!
